West of Estepona
Sotogrande is an exclusive urbanisation located between Estepona and the Rock of Gibraltar. It was founded in 1962 by Joseph McMicking, and is now the largest privately owned gated community in Andalusia. A beachfront urbanisation, Sotogrande is one of the most sought after luxury residential complexes on the Costa del Sol.
Although practically a village within itself, Sotogrande falls into the San Roque municipality. The urbanisation was built in such a way that they retained the area’s natural beauty.
The urbanisation is well known for its sporting facilities - it’s especially famed for its polo field, Santa María Polo Club, that was opened in 1965. The polo club now hosts tournaments which famous sportsmen from Spain and foreign countries have attended. The polo club is now known as one of the best in Europe.
Sotogrande is also home to none less than six golf courses, including the famous Valderrama Golf Club. Valderrama hosted the Ryder Cup in 1997, as well as the WGC-American Express Championships, the Volvo Masters and the Andalusian Masters several times over the years.
Sotogrande port offers a sailing and yachting club as well as a grand variety of boating activities, and is well known for being the first port in the Mediterranean Sea from the Atlantic Ocean. Inside the port, visitors can find a variety of bars and restaurants.
Sotogrande is just a 25 minute drive from Gibraltar, and 1 hour and 10 minutes from Málaga.
Alcaidesa is a large urbanisation located inside the municipalities of La Línea de la Concepción and San Roque. The urbanisation itself is located close to the Rock of Gibraltar.
The area is well known as a tourist resort, as well as being a high-end residential area. The development features sandy beaches and stunning views of the Mediterranean coastline.
The urbanisation was developed in the early 1990s by a company named Alcaidesa Inmobiliaria. The project was a joint venture between said company and Costain PLC and Banesto Bank. The residences were constructed within strict guidelines, as the developers wanted the urbanisation to feature traditional pueblo style houses, as well as limit the growth of development. Also on the urbanisation are several villas, townhouses, and apartments.
